Forlì

A view of Forlì's main square - Piazza Saffi

Forlì is not known for its tourist attractions, but it has a few hidden gems and places we like to come back to.

Food and drink

Pizzeria Altero

Saverio's favourite pizza al taglio. Perfect for a cheap, tasty snack to eat on the go. Open late.

Corso della Repubblica, 67
Freddino

This gelateria is a little out of the centre but worth it for the best gelato in Forlì.

Viale dell'Appennino, 120
Flora (Piazza Saffi)

Nice spot in one of the main squares for aperitivo. It doesn't have a full kitchen but you can get drinks and light bites with nice views of the square.

Piazza Aurelio Saffi, 45
Ciacarò

Small wine bar with a pleasant vibe. More of an inside spot but delicious wine and nice food too.

Via dei Mille, 13
Mercato delle erbe (piazza)

This is a very nice square with several places to eat and drink including:
Benso: the fancy restaurant in Forlì
BiFOR: trendy spot for beer and burgers
Casa Hirta: pizzeria with a strong focus on quality ingredients locally and sustainably sourced wherever possible

Piazza Cavour and surrounding area

Things to do

Rocca di Ravaldino

Medieval castle. Only open on the weekends from 10am to 1pm and then 5pm to 7:30pm. Free to visit but the tours are only in Italian. It only opened to the public earlier this year!

Via Giovanni dalle Bande Nere, 1
Parco Urbano

Nice park (and close to Freddino). It would be a nice idea if you can rent a bike to cycle out there and around it. If you're lucky you might spot some rabbits around the Collina dei Conigli (literally Rabbit Hill).

Piazza Guido da Montefeltro, 12

Bologna

Bologna is a great city, famous for its food and all around lively. The suggestions below are the tip of the iceberg, wherever you go you're likely to have a good time and tasty dishes. Probably Saverio's favourite city in the world.

A view of Bologna with its two towers

Food and drink

Impero

Delicious pastries. Perfect for a cappuccino and a cornetto at breakfast time.

Via Indipendenza 39/A 39/B and Via Caprarie 4/2
Corten

The best pizza we've ever eaten!

Via Garibaldi, 5h
Guero

One of our favourite cocktail spots to meet with friends. The cocktail menu is extensive and creative. The food has an American/Tex Mex theme (burgers, hot dogs, tacos, burritos) which can be quite nice for a change from what you typically get around Bologna. Good Vegetarian and vegan options.

Via Goito, 9/2a
Botanica Lab Cucina

Smart vegan restaurant with creative dishes.

Via Battibecco, 4
Pan8

Creative sandwiches. Good for a light lunch right near the central piazza that isn’t a tourist trap! Good vegetarian and vegan options.

Via d'Azeglio, 8
SensoVerso

We stumbled upon this place last summer as it hadn’t been open long. It looked fairly unassuming but we were pleasantly surprised by how good the cocktails were and the staff were friendly.

Via Guglielmo Oberdan, 24d
Cremeria Cavour

Top-rated gelato. Expect a queue.

P.za Cavour, 1d

Coffee

Aroma

The only coffee bar in Bologna that meets Saverio’s standards. Specialty coffees brewed by an award-winning barista.

Via Porta Nova, 12b
Terzi

If you want the more authentic (but still Saverio-approved) Italian coffee experience, Terzi is an old-school place for an espresso drunk standing up at the bar. It has a nice choice of beans ranging from something fairly standard to more expensive and exclusive varieties.

Via Guglielmo Oberdan, 10d

Things to do

Giardini di Margherita

A nice park on the edge of the city. Serre dei Giardini is a lovely and unique spot for a coffee or some drinks housed among the gardens’ old greenhouses with outdoor and indoor space. There’s a programme of film, live music and events across the summer too.

Via Castiglione, 134
MAMbo Bologna

Modern Art isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but if it’s yours, this is a very good collection. Allow for 1-2 hours to go round it. Entrance fee: 6 Euros. Closed on Mondays.

Via Don Giovanni Minzoni, 14
Sette Chiese

A really unique church experience! This complex of seven religious buildings all linked together shows an interesting mix of styles all in one place. The piazza in front of it (Piazza Santo Stefano) is also a beautiful spot to sit and have a drink.

Via Santo Stefano, 24
Explore the city and especially i portici

While brimming with places, Bologna is a city that’s best enjoyed by wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere. The portici (arched walkways) are a unique feature of the city and a great way to explore the city centre without getting wet in the cold months, or sunburn in the summer. The 'T Zone' formed by Via dell'Indipendenza, Via Rizzoli and Via Ugo Bassi is the main area, with Piazza Maggiore in the middle. Bonus tip: Saverio’s favourite portici are in Strada Maggiore.

Strada Maggiore

Shopping

Vintage by Silvia Fini

Olivia has done extensive research on the best vintage shops in Bologna and this comes in at the top spot! Genuine vintage, good quality, a nice mix of decades and styles.

Via d'Azeglio, 50/C
Double Trouble

An original Bolognese brand run by twin sisters. They make casual clothing in African wax print fabrics and leather bags using sustainable practices. The tortellini keyrings are a great souvenir! They also run workshops where you can make your own tortellino keyring or bags (Olivia is very proud of her leather tote bag that she made with them!)

Str. Maggiore, 13/E
Humano Vintage

Affordable second-hand clothing. One of the larger vintage stores in Bologna, it’s well organised in rails.

Via S. Felice, 37
